Through Walthamstow lies an ancient route from London to Waltham Abbey, which includes several different modern day roads including, Leyton High Road and Chingford road.
Waltthamstow started to become urbanised in the 19th century as a result of the development of railway networks across the country. The ability to easily move goods and people around at high speed improved the London economy and thus the amount of people wanting to move to the area, this lead to urbanisation with areas such as Walthamstow becoming popular places for both businesses and individuals to locate themselves. In 1931 the population of Walthamstow was registered at 132,972. Despite its closeness to London Walthamstow was officially in the county of Essex until 1965 when it changed along with many other local towns and became included within Greater London.
Walthamstow has several famous historical characters including William Morris who was famous for his wallpaper designs, poems and key role in the socialist movement of his time. Frederick Bremer originated from Walthamstow and is acknowledged as the designer and builder of the first British petrol powered motor car.
The popular 90â ™s boy band East 17 were also from Walthamstow and named their first album after the town.
There are some interesting places to see and visit within the Walthamstow region including the William Morris museum located in Morrisâ ™ original house.
The Walthamstow EMD cinema on Hoe Street which opened in 1930 was designed by Cecil Masey and has fine Art Deco interiors. In 2003 the building was purchased by a church with the plan to turn the building into a Church and conference centre, however planning permission was turned down and the future of the grade two listed building remains uncertain.
The Walthamstow stadium, which is actually located in Chingford has been run by the same family since it opened in 1933. It allegedly has the largest attendance and income from gambling in the UK, it was also home to the Walthamstow Wolves speedway team in the 1940â ™s.
Walthamstow has a good choice of shops with a mall containing 55 shops and a street market that claims to be the longest in Europe being 2.1km in length.
If youâ ™re passing through the area be sure to stop off and spend a few hours in one of Londonâ ™s many interesting towns.
