  • I am a 13 year old and totally ready to get a dog!!! I have been looking at pet adoptions but nothing seams to work. Plwase help me!!!!!

  • aaarggggghhhhh! stop already.

  • Just show your parents that you are responsible by doing chores and getting good grades in school. Without being asked, just do your chores or ask your parents if there's anything you can do to help out around the house, etc.

The last thing your parents want is to be bothered by this every single day. So what I would do is sit down and write a letter to your parents. Like, "Dear mom and dad, I really want a dog because........... " and write down the reasons you want a dog. If you get an allowance, save your money for a dog. In the letter write down what type of breed you want (a pomeranian is little and oh-so-cute, but need extra special training and can be expensive. try for a mix breed, or tell your parents you'd like to save one from the pound). Tell them what kind of dog you want, then tell them how you plan on caring for it since it'll be your responsibility. There's vet care, there's food, you have to take it for walks or make sure it has somewhere to run and play.

    good luck

  • I have an 11 yo cousin whom i have joint custody of and when she started wanting a dog we got her a computer animated one. Like a webzinky or a computer game. Anyways we told her if she could take care of her fake dog for six months without letting it die or get sick she could have a real one. She checked on it several times a day and showed real responsiblity even though it wasnt really and she got her dog six months later. And she continues to take 100% of the responsiblity of her dog aside from bying its food and paying its vet bills of course. Maybe you could talk to them about doing it this way! Good Luck!

  • How to Persuade Your Parents to Get a Dog

You've decided that you want a dog, but you're not sure what your parents will say. Want to convince them that a dog will be a good addition to the family? Read on.
    [edit] Steps

    1.
You need someone to play catch with, don't you? Mr. Rover here also needs a buddy!
You need someone to play catch with, don't you? Mr. Rover here also needs a buddy!
Let them know that you are definitely responsible enough to handle the responsibility of owning a pet. Be ready to demonstrate that by volunteering to be tested. Have your parents give you something to take care of for a set amount of time. It can be an egg with a mark on it (don't let it break!) a sack of flour, a plant, a virtual pet (a virtual pet meaning the dogs on the Petz 5 games. www.google.com. type in "Petz 5".) or even a friend's pet. Doing well on this test run may help show your parents that you're responsible and serious about wanting a dog.
    2. Do chores around the house to prove you are responsible. Offer to help with the extra housecleaning and vacuuming. Dogs can be messy, especially before they're housebroken. Most dogs will shed. Since it is you who wants a dog, you should make the extra effort. You should explain to your parents that you are willing to do this before the dog gets there to prove your sincerity.
    3. Do your homework! Find local shelters, see about their shots and if they come with a leash and collar, research training techniques, etc. This will make your parents believe that you really are serious

    4. Make a presentation, and show it to your parents. Make sure to include a list of the things that you will do so that the dog gets taken care of, supplies the dog will need, average prices the supplies will cost, and maybe even find a dog that matches the breed that you want at a local breeder or animal shelter.
    5. List the benefits of having a dog:

    * The dog will help you to be responsible.
    * The dog can become a companion for the whole family.
    * Walking a dog can help you get more exercise.
    * Dogs can sometimes be trained to perform useful tasks, such as warning you of intruders or fetching objects.
    * Dogs can be therapeutic, especially during sad or lonely times. A dog is a friend that will always be there to cheer you up!
    6. Some people believe dogs can sense paranormal activity. If you are a believer, your dog can be on the watch!
    7. Learn how to house-train a dog so that it will not poop in the house. Books on the subject can be found and borrowed free from your local library. Learn as much as you can about dogs, not just about basic care. Read books about breeds, dog-related sports, common diseases, cute tricks, nutrition, etc. This will show that you are willing go the extra mile for your future dog.
    8. Take a friend or relative's dog for a weekend as a "test run" to show your parents that you are ready for the responsibility.
    9. Offer to help pay for the dog food by doing extra chores or contributing some of your pocket money.
    10. Give them time to think about it. Pestering them will only undo your earlier work showing them that you are mature and responsible.
    11. If your parents eventually let you have a dog, follow through on your promises. You can even sign a contract with them before you get your dog listing your new responsibilities.
    12. You should talk first to the person you most trust(mom or dad) and get them to talk to the other parent
    13. When you decide you want a dog, get a mom or dad not a grandparent, because the grandparent is not the one who will have a new dog in the house, YOU and YOUR parents will. Ease into talking them into it. One day tell them facts about dogs. Then, you tell them more. As you finish telling them every thing you think they should know, then you ask for the dog. If they say no, keep telling them stuff about the dog. If they say yes, well it was your lucky day!

    [edit] Tips

    * If your parents say NO to a dog because you have a cat, there are many ways you can get around that problem. The first thing is this: Dogs chasing cats is a stereotype. Dogs don't necessarily chase cats. But, if your parents still are worried...If you get the dog when it is a puppy, you can teach the dog how to behave around the cat. Puppies are still learning, and you can teach any pup to not bug or chase a cat. If you are planning on an older dog, usually the breeder or shelter will tell you if the dog is good around cats or not. Anyways, it usually happens that adult dogs (unless they are strict herders) will leave the cat alone.
    * If your parents won't get a dog because you already have other animals and they say you don't need any more to take care of, be as responsible as possible and make sure your animals are in the best of care 24/7. Leave nothing for them to criticize. If you keep it up for a week, maybe a month, you will eventually get your point through.
    * If you have a hamster, guinea pig, rabbit, rat, or mouse, MAKE SURE TO KEEP THEM SAFE AND SECURE!!! Most dogs will think that these animals are food. But if your rabbit is an adult, dogs usually won't bother them because they can get PRETTY BIG! And sometimes if your dog is friendly, they will can think that the hamster is their pup (AW!)
    * If your parents, after all you have done to convince them that you are responsible enough to have a dog and really take care of it, still decide that they don't want to or cannot have a dog, here are some more things you can do:
o You can find out where the animal shelters are in your neighborhood and go volunteer there to help take care of some homeless dogs.
o You can find out if there are elderly neighbors who have dogs and cannot walk them regularly. You could volunteer to walk their dogs for them.
    * Dogs, especially puppies, need a lot of things to chew on while they are developing their teeth. You can also find suggestions on how to keep your dog from chewing your shoes and clothes. You must be prepared to get them appropriate toys to chew.
    * Dogs need regular exercise. You will have to sacrifice some of your personal time with friends or hobbies to walk your dog. It may help to convince your parents that you are willing to do this if you tell them you are going to go for a walk daily prior to getting the dog. You will have to do this regularly once the dog gets there, and more than once a day.
    * Dogs cannot be left behind while the family goes on vacation. If you leave for a family vacation, you must either find a friend to take care of your dog while you are gone or take the dog to a kennel. You should find a friend whose parents are willing to do this, or you should find a kennel. Find out how much it costs to board your dog and prepare to save up some money so you can be responsible for your dog's care.
    * Offer to pay for the dog yourself. This will show that you want one enough to spend your own money on it, and that you won't think of it as just another toy to play with until you get bored.
    * When your parents say that you cannot have a dog, don't shout at them or get angry, this will make them even more determined to stop you. Be nice and smile, but keep persevering.
    * If your parents or you are just getting over the loss of another dog, wait a little bit so they know that you don't just want a dog to fill the "gap".
    * tell them you can pay for it. do odd jobs so you can get the money most of the problems in getting a dog is that they cost quite alot and your parents do not want to spent so much.
    * ask for it for christmas, birthdays and other stuff they'll get the message
    * If your parents say that they are not at home enough to look after one, suggest looking into dog walkers that will take the dog out for the day and give them exercise and train them to be sociable too.

    [edit] Warnings

    * A dog is for life, not just for Christmas. You must be able to care for a dog, it is a living thing like you and me. If you do get a dog, you must care for it, or else your parents might give it to a dog home. It sounds fine saying that you will walk it every day, but it becomes hard when it is wet or cold outside, or you just feel lazy. Remember this before you get a dog.
    * Maybe your parents cannot afford a dog but don't want to tell you. If so, don't persevere as this will make them feel guilty and upset.
    * If you ask too often, they will shut you out.
    * If someone in your family is allergic to dogs, you must put their health first. There are some dogs that produce less dander than most dogs and may not bother people with allergies. Check on any potential health concerns well before you bring a dog home.
    * A dog is a lifetime commitment. Dogs can live to be 17 years old and some live even longer. You and your family should have plans for who will take care of the dog in the future, such as when you go off to college.
    * There are laws that state that you must pick up the poop from your dog. Decide if you are willing and able to do this
    * Some parents are stubborn, just persevere and smile every time they say NO.*
    * Do NOT sulk around, it does not work at all, it just makes your parents mad. It also makes them less likely to even THINK about getting a dog, so DO NOT sulk.*
    * You might want a dog SO bad that when they say NO, you feel really hurt. Don't let that hurt you, just smile and keep hoping.*

    [edit] Things You'll Need

    * A good collar and a leash. A well-trained dog is a safe dog.
    * You will need the names and phone numbers of veterinarians and kennels in case the dog needs health care or needs to be boarded.
    * Patience. It takes a lot of patience to train a puppy

  • I don't think you can convince your parents that you're ready for a dog. Are you responsible? If you are then they have seen that and you can say to them something like "You've seen that I'm responsible, you've seen that I take care of the things I need to take care of and I take care of my own things. I'll take care of my own dog, I'll feed him and water him. If I don't feed and water him like I should then you can get rid of him."

I hope that works but please if you do get a dog TAKE very good care of him. Sometimes it can be hard work. First you have to get the proper vaccines and things. Making sure he doesn't get fleas and ticks can be a hard chore and costly. Then you've got to have heart worm medicine for him. You've got to have a good dog food for him (do not buy him ol roy dog food, it's dangerous.. caused one of my dogs cancer and he died from it) get him something like Eukanuba dog food. He's got to have shelter from the rain, snow and summer sun. In the winter he's got to have woodshavings for warmth. He's got to have a few toys, a water pan, a feeding bowl. A rabies vaccine, a rabies tag, and a collar. Having a dog can be hard work. I'd say that if you get a dog you should get one that doesn't shed and one that's an inside dog. A good one for being an inside dog is a long haired Chihuahua, they don't shed and they are good dogs.

  • didn't you ask this question last week

  • It's pretty obvious that your parents don't want a dog--stop bugging them & show them your serious & responsible enough by volunteering at the local shelter or rescue group. When you act responsible & take the initiative you'll probably get your dog.
