  • I am thinking of going with the wife and I was wondering if anyone had been while keeping kosher. I am pretty sure that I can bring food in with no issues and suppose I can get frozen meals for the hotels to warm for us. (would they down there?)

Any of the supermarkets have anything to get as well??

    Thanks

  • Thanks for the research while you were there. We actually went ahead and booked Fiji, so maybe you want to do our due dilligence for us in Fiji?>????

    Thanks again!

Gladly! Now if I could just get the time off of work....

Enjoy! I am sure it will be amazing as well!

  • PS Living on fruit in Tahiti would be a good thing! It's amazing, and so sweet. it's going to take awhile before I bring myself to eat the fruit available here.

  • keep in mind that there is a big debate as to where the halchik date line is, and that shabbos may actually not be on saturday, being that shabbos is a torah prohibition many rabbis are concerned about this, ask your rabbi. I know that hawaii has this issue i believe that fiji does also.

  • We just got back from Tahiti, but sorry, we don't keep Kosher, however, as we were checking out from a cute boutique in Papeete I noticed a Hamesh Hand and an American dollar bill with 'Mazel Tov' written on it. As we had already been in the Tahitian Islands for 2 weeks and hadn't seen anything even close to Jewish so I asked the shop owner about it, and she explained that her fiance was Jewish (and from LA), and how she wants to have a Chuppah and the Hora at her wedding. We asked if there were any Jewish cultural sites on the islands and she shared that there were 300 Jews in Tahiti and they had one shul. As it was our last day we didn't have enough time to visit it which was disappointing. If you do end up going you might want to check out the shop, it's called Bamboo Kultur

  • In Tahiti, a number of products in the grocery store were the same as in America and had familiar certification, products such as peanut butter, cereals, tuna, canned vegetables, Haagen dazs, etc. And there are lots of fruits and vegetables. We managed to do ok.

the sabbath issue is a very complicated one, but I think most rabbis agree that you can go with the locals in determing that sabbath is on saturday, but you need to hear it from your rav

  • While the Labriut meals are no 8 course gourmet meal I they are pretty good when nothing else is around. I know that the US army uses them as kosher MRE's, as least in noncombat situations. Much better than the Israeli Manot Krav versions.

I haven't been there, but my guess is that you'll find some products with an American hechsher, but more goods from mainland France. It may be worth taking a copy of the Paris Beth Din list as most products in Europe do not have any markings to indicate they are kosher. You can download it here

  • If you don't find anything and/or dont want to live on fruit and tuna fish, try the LaBriute meals http://labriutemeals.com/main.htm. They are actually pretty decent. I have a friend who lived off of them for 2 months while volunteering in Africa.
