Sorry if off topic (please move to appropriate thread):

I'm doing a NW mileage run JFK-NRT-NGO (stay for one week)-DTW-JFK. With silver elite, Nagoya, nwa.com, and online check in I get 28,000 miles for $580. I get into Nagoya pretty late, is there a safe place to sleep in the airport, or do you immediately pass through customs out into the terminal? Thanks for any responses.

  • to all that posted above, I read all of your posts. The relaxation room sounds promising. If Snoopyo could either post or pm me hotel info that would be great- the two hotels at the train station, are they usually sold out?

Also, does anyone know, if I fly JFK-NRT-NGO do I clear customs at NRT or NGO? There's only a 1 hr 15 min connect time so I assume it's at NGO.

  • schistosomiasis,

My previous post had the links to the two hotels near the train station already. The generic one is the first link. I am also enclosing the address and contacts here. If you click on the link and click on Book Now, you can check your dates.

I stayed at the Crown Hotel which is the last link and about 15 min walk or 5 min cab from the rail station near subway FUSHIMI.

NAGOYA CROWN HOTEL - THE HOTEL HAS A HOT SPRING.
Address 1-8-33, SAKAE, NAKA-KU, NAGOYA, AICHI 460-0008, JAPAN
    Phone Number / Fax Number +81-52-211-6633 / +81-52-211-4412

The middle link is comfort hotel so you might be able to book on choice hotel website as well.
    COMFORT HOTEL NAGOYA CHIYODA
THE HOTEL IS A MEMBER OF CHOICE HOTELS INTERNATIONAL.
Address 1-16-10, NISHIKI, NAKA-KU, NAGOYA, AICHI 460-0003, JAPAN
    Phone Number / Fax Number +81-52-221-6711 / +81-52-221-6729

Those can be booked out, when I checked from the airport travel agent at about 5pm, Crown hotel was one of those they cannot find availability and when I arrived the train station at 6:30pm, I was able to book at one there through a TA but they might have had a cancellation since I think the hotel had a 6pm cancellation policy. While I was there, they had a meeting of NEC there...

If you are arriving late, I would be more comfortable to have a hotel at least for the first night, if not for the whole period, since I do not know the language and NGO is not great for finding people speaking English. I had to use a lot of hand gestures.

Note: these are not Western style hotel but Japanese business hotels. Small but adequately equiped.

  • NGO moved to a new facility in Feb. 205. I guess the information from the above link is outdated. But the same rule could apply in the new airport, who knows.

  • The new NGO airport doesn't close at night, but you're probably going to run into the opposite problem, of the airport being obnoxiously loud and busy. I was there a few weeks ago, and it is such a novelty with the locals that the place is full of people just shopping and eating, not travellers. Once you come out of customs you're dumped into the busiest part of the airport, which is the departure and arrivals lobbies and skytown, which is basically a mall. You might have better luck with the Center Pier Garden; that area was a lot quieter while I was there. Here's a map of the airport (http://www.centrair.jp/en) to give you an idea of what you might find. Good luck!

It won't be a place to sleep, but be sure to check out the SkyDeck while you're at NGO-it's a really neat outdoor place to watch the flights landing and taking off.

  • I just did YOW-ORD-NGO return on AABOS to go to Expo for the a day with 50 hrs in NGO. Should have done it as a mileage run considering the ORD-NGO was under $500 all in.

First, CENTAIR is the new terminal and brand spanking new. When you exit the plane, you go through immigration and we went through pretty quickly. After luggage, you exit into the terminal. They would not allow you to stay without exiting to terminal. In the arrivals area, there is a internet station with access Yen 100 for 10 mins, a foreign exchange place - note US$ has best exchange rate for cash, otherwise, it might be good to get some TC since there is a differential between cash and TC rates and a cash machine. Did not explore too far in the area.

There are some shops and stuff in the departure level but with Japanese, I doubt if they are happy with people sleeping with airports but might be polite and not say anything.

Going through the connector walkway, you arrive at the train station area and there are 2 hotels attached that has rooms for about 6,000 yen or so for a single if you can get availability. There is a tourist office that books accomodation in NYO but they would close aroudn 7-8 pm and I would not advise arriving without reservation for at least night 1 since with NGO, availability can be spotty. the one at the airport called about a dozen places for me and cannot find a single room and only offered me a double room for about 21,000 Yen.

Also, you can try to book on
    http://www.mytrip.net/en/ (courtesy of theZipper)
or the japanese site if you know someone who reads japanese.

I see from checking Apr 18 that comfort hotel near train station is available
6300 Yen including breakfast. The rooms are small in those types of hotels but usually more than adequate.

I got the travel agent near the JR station to book me a hotel around the corner from the Hilton. The Crown hotel was 5775 Yen per day plus 525 Yen booking fee. It had robes, slippers, hot spring public bath and free internet ^ suppose to be in room internet but I used the complementary internet cabin downstairs 7:30-22:00 since my plug had a ground and did not fit the outlet in my room. they were fairly nice and I liked the neighbourhood, it is right opposite the theatre showing what appears to be Lion King.

If you want some more numbers for hotels, let me know by posting here.

Train to the city is 1200 Yen for the express that takes 28 minutes and run approximately twice an hour during regular hours or 850 Yen which takes an hour and you might have to change. I would recommend a phrase book if anyone is going there since I had some issue finding people speaking English at times.

Expo was a little disappointing. There were some decent exhibitions but I found I far preferred the one in Serville in '92 (if I am not dating myself :D ). A lot of the Asian and other ones are almost a store / restaurant combination than really about the country, the culture the people, etc. I heard the robot exhibition and some of the company exhibition was nice but it was a 40 or 80 minute wait on a Wednesday or timed tickets. A lot of the video presentation are only in Japanese... If you go, the Argentina was was excellent with the tango show and Spain was very good with the singing group in full traditional costume and the mini gift bottle red wine. The Asian square had some decent shows (common 6) so when you arrive at a common area, check on the stage to see if there are any interesting show first... The only country I wanted to see but missed is Germany. They were closed for part of the afternoon (I think for a party for National day) and as a result had long lines even at 7pm or 8pm.

    Hope this helps,
    Mary
