My 8 years old daughter has just came home from school and found her hamster curled up and hardley moving his eyes are awake but he seems really weak, does any one know how i can help him.

  • when it happened to mine they sed it had a stroke, and it wil die

  • That could be one of many problems, all you can do to help it is to find a vet ASAP call them and find out if you should let nature run its course or if you need to bring the thing in.

  • first off , it could be hibernating , cup it in your hands and warm it up , if itdoesnt warm up after about 20 mins its definately not hibernating..

It depends how old the hamstr is and it could be dying of old age , if it is over a year , expect this to be the reason.

Another reason is that i t may have caught a cold , make sure its not near any draughts or drafts (for example not near a window or door)
take it too the vets if you think this is the case

There are many other hamster diseases but not many are prone to your symptoms .x

If your hamster does die , make sure you give it a proper goodbye , im over 13 nd my hasmter died a week ago nd i was proper sad , Make sure you comfort ur kid .x
i know what its like for her and shes younger..x

    hope this isnt the case.x

  • if your pet is ill the first thing you should do it get him/her to the vets or call them. i made that mistake once and i lost my pet because of it :(

  • Seriously get it to a vet, no one here can tell you whats wrong especially with so vague a description. Hamsters are virtually impossible to treat with major illnesses so be prepared for bad news.

  • Why are you on yahoo answers! Take it too the vet ASAP!

  • this happened to mine once and i saved him :D do you have a ball for him? like when you put him in it while your cleaning his cage and he can exercise? well i put mine in one of them with lots of fluffy bedding/cotton wool and some foot lying around. then put him near the Radiator and in a basket so he couldn't roll away, i left him there for a few hours and then he was fine. sadly this happened again about a year or so later and he passed away :(

  • I'm so sorry. that happened to my hamster. he died in about 1 day. sometimes it takes less. if you want to ease his pain, just take him to the vet and have him put to sleep. i'm so sorry! you can't help him.

  • I had two hamsters years ago and sorry to break it to you but if he/she is quite old then it is dying.

A hamster only lives around 18months to 2 years (the faster an animals heartbeat, the shorter its lifespan). My second hamster died fairly fast but the second one lived over two years and in the last week of its life was fine one day and then very slow the next, not even managing to walk to her feed bowl.

There is a strong chance that the hamster will die soon so it's up to you how you handle this - is your daughter strong enough to cope with finding the hamster 'asleep' the next day?

You can take him/her to the vets to be put to sleep but chances are, this will happen naturally very soon anyway. You might want to gently take hammy out of the cage and sit him/her with your daughter so she can stroke it one last time and say her goodbyes.

    All the best. x
