I was under the impression that on reward tickets, one could standby for an earlier flight free of charge? I've done it in the past, I check in online, and I'm allowed (in OLCI) to select an earlier flight. I am trying to do that right now, and my session doesn't allow me to select any other options other than the one I originally booked?

  • I think the order of changes was:

    1. Booking fee went up from $0 to $25 when booking by telephone, even if reward is not available on line.

    2. Standby no longer available for all of same day; only for earlier flights.

    3. Taxes and fees on reward tickets jacked up to exorbitant rates; in some cases (transborder short-haul, for instance) amounting to between 30% and 40% of the regular fare.

    4. New reward redemption system so that you can pay up to and even well over 3 times the normal miles for your ticket.

    5. Standby no longer free; now must pay an extra $50 to cofirm same-day change, and can only make this change at the airport, thus rendering a confirmed change for later flight meaningless.

I can't wait to see what the next enhancement will be!

  • I think the order of changes was:

Really? Booking fee is $30 and has been that way for AT LEAST 2 years now for booking through the call center.

    2. Standby no longer available for all of same day; only for earlier flights.

Standby has only ever been allowed for earlier flights. The only change is now it's only valid on business rewards, not economy. How can standby be allowed for later flights as you would then have no confirmed ticket you could fly on if all later flights were full.

No taxes changed recently...Aeroplan has been charging fuel surcharges for at least 2 years.

    See #2.

  • On reward tickets, standby (for earlier flights) can only be done for those confirmed in J. If you want to take a different flight on a W ticket, you will have to pay the $55 same day change fee.

To be clear, if someone has used a business reward but is only confirmed in economy is it correct that they'd have to pay the $55 change fee to try to get on a different flight?

If they pay the $55 fee, assume that they'd still be wait listed for business but could pay if they thought the loads were more favorable?

It's actually $50 same for confirmed same day standby at the airport when travelling in economy. A seat must be available in economy for this option.

The $55 applies if it is confirmed by calling in before arriving at the airport and changing flight over the phone. W class must be available for this option.

  • Customer Relations information and direct e-mail is available on aircanada.com.

Does AC Customer Solutions directly handle Aeroplan ticket issues? I've never understood who does what since both entities point the finger at each other on a regular basis.

I realize that it was AC agents who were adamant about charging for same-day J/D standby both outbound and return, but it is the communication between AP and AC that is causing the problem, no?

  • where Andrew (then still known, I believe, as Princess)

Empress (as in CP). There's a world of difference.

  • Andrew, Andrew, Andrew. Although that is what SHOULD occur, the J check-in agents at YYC on Thursday afternoon were adamant that "standing by" for the 3 pm flight would be charged a fee. Rather than argue with her, the fee was paid to get on the flight b4 it took off. Who should I write to about this getting refunded and more importantly, how can the agents be so confused about this policy?

Customer Relations information and direct e-mail is available on aircanada.com.

  • Yes, it's new. I don't recall the exact date but it was implemented towards the end of 2006.

  • They are confused because policy changes so often.

I was flying paid J from ICN last year, and the agent tried to charge me for having one 65lb and one 55lb bag, even though that was well within my limits. I can't really blame her, though, as I really think that AC still has this culture of 'if you don't charge something you should, you're in trouble'. Witness the other story where the phone agent hadn't heard about the website issues and suggested that the customer call back via the web support desk... ridiculous customer service.

  • Empress (as in CP). There's a world of difference.

Ha! My apologies to Andrew for the slip, which has been amended in the previous post.

Is this new? I swear I did this only a year or so ago. Standby was no problem on the same day as long as the flight was an earlier flight than the one scheduled.

  • You'll have to just show at the airport, you cannot request and confirm in advance. OLCI appears to have a built in mechanism that tailors options -- upgrade, standby for earlier flight -- to the type of fare purchased, so these options don't always appear.

  • Really? Booking fee is $30 and has been that way for AT LEAST 2 years now for booking through the call center.

Yes, really. It used to be possible to book via telephone for free. The telephone booking fee came into existence in July 2003.

Perhaps you weren't aware that it is possible to search flyertalk. It helps people avoid posting silly things. Anyway, here is a bit of help. You could try this thread:

    http://flyertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=20336

Mea culpa, however, as I was not aware the fee had gone up to $30. I guess that would be change #6.

Standby has only ever been allowed for earlier flights. The only change is now it's only valid on business rewards, not economy. How can standby be allowed for later flights as you would then have no confirmed ticket you could fly on if all later flights were full.

Alas you are also wrong about this, my canine friend. I used to stand by for later flights with reward tickets all the time. Admittedly it was a risk, as I would have been SOL had I not gotten on, but by checking loads and weighing the risks it was certainly workable. In any event, it is a fact that the policy used to be in place.

Since you seem to need help using the search function, give this post a try: http://flyertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=376086, where Andrew (then still known, I believe, as Empress) indicates that change took place on Nov. 29, 2004.

I don't know what your definition of "only ever is," but mine does include c. pre-2004.

No taxes changed recently...Aeroplan has been charging fuel surcharges for at least 2 years.

When Aeroplan switched to become a separate company the taxes and fees it charges for reward tickets syrocketed. Exorbitant fuel surcharges I believe came later though I'm not entirely certain. May have happened before.

I won't bother helping you use the search on this one, since there has been very very extensive discussion on this matter. It is an issue that rankles many people on this board.

I can't wait to see when you will get your information right.

Tell you what, wolvie: I'll try if you try.

On this item, you really should switch from Aeroplan to other programs, as still many other Star carrier programs offer "free of charge" rewards ticket change, should another flight is available.

Aeroplan is a real sucker for implimenting a fee 3-4 years ago.

  • The agents at the airport are telling you that there is a $50 charge to standby for earlier seats in Executive when youare travelling on an Executive award ticket. However, my recent experience are that they will waive this fee.

  • Yes, it's new. I don't recall the exact date but it was implemented towards the end of 2006.

    Lovely.
