  • If Li returns this will mean an extra 20million for the employees!! Now we are talking! :)

  • Samcat, check your FlyerTalk Private Message...I explain how there!
    Nothing malicious, I assure you.

  • A condition of the Debtor in Posession financing from GE (and the aircraft refinance and ERJ purchase) was that the existing management team remain at AC. The team included Calin and Robert by name.

Therefore can we assume this was vetted by the folks in Stamford???? Will the other shoe be a GE pull out. GE seems to like both Robert and Calin.

Another scenario is that the unions will talk now that Rovinescu is gone. Milton's millions hit the bin along with the TTI offer.

  • The Li`s are gone gone gone.

Frank Sixt, Rovinescu`s best friend, whom the G&M article refers to, is the CFO for Hutchison Whampoa and Director of Cheung Kong. Sixt along with Canning Fok are the Li`s closest non-family associates; if Rovinescu`s gone I dont see them coming back to the table.

  • I apologize to ex ac for the strong language, ie you haven't got a clue!
However, you seem to be trying to convince people here that the
only concessions that the CAW took was a decrease in salary for
two months. I'll bet the CAW wishes it were true. They took many
other concession on benefits, that they will never get back, as I
mentioned on my other post, that totalled millions of dollars.
As for me being a "union thug" thanks
a lot, seems everyone here can dish it out, but can't take it.

  • Lets Hope Milton is next.

    I'll second that.

I suppose it's quite possible Calin Rovinescu was the true bad guy here. But he should take Milton down with him.

  • Bring on Don Carty!
........ If Li is right and the promised savings were not there, isn't that the fault of the management team who negotiated them?

Carty already has another job and in a far more hospitable place than Air Canada and Montreal.

Your comment about promised savings shows that you know nothing of the relationship with CAW and CUPE. They both reneged on their deals and the collapse of the Li deal is a result.

  • I agree. exAC is a valued member here and his posts are usually right on the mark. I've also seen you try to take on Empress here in the past, with your vast "35 years of knowledge with the airline" Well, I'm sorry to say it SAMCAT, but Empress & exAC probably know more about what goes on at AC than any of your bosses' bosses in those 35 years! • Well, it now seems much clearer that the unions knew more than they were letting on, and given the relationship with CR and the Lis it is a toss-up as to who bears the bulk of any blame. The 1% stock deal certainly does look like a fix to deliver the revised pension model. Cerbrerus is back in the runnning according to CBC Radio news, at least to kick the tires around again once the Judge permits them access to certain information. May 14th is the new deadline. Still, I'd like to see a Carty/Texas Int'l/ONEX/CIBC/Amex package.

As for whether the unions did or did not meet the cost savings, I guess it is more a question of how realistic management is in its business plan and staffing levels to provide the service customer expect. True, work rules are key to this, but as we have consistently seen when AC does through staff reductions, they cut too deep, run into customer problems, and then have to hire back or take on new-hires. HR is still a major weakness, so if the job cannot be done with the staff levels management set in its new plan, some of the blame must be taken at that level, not just on the shop floor.

CAW agreed to big time layoffs and work rules to go along with the layoffs to make it work. In lieu of this they only took a two month salary decrease. Since then the CAW have taken out full page ads in newspapers saying 'Service is Priceless' in an attempt to block the layoffs.

You are correcy that cupe stalled here. But the PBS system is to be in place this summer.

  • Bring on Don Carty!

The G&M article is a good, balanced one but RM and CR seem to be the villains. Why would they not point out to Mr. Li they had promised not to touch employee pensions? If Li is right and the promised savings were not there, isn't that the fault of the management team who negotiated them?

  • Here http://www.acfamily.net/ is the link to said site mentioned above.

    Some interesting browsing.

  • People , don't think for a minute that if CR saw any way to push this forward he would still be there(and collect the 20 mil). You might not like him (or any of the management) but he isn't anyone's fool. If his retirement/dismissal works to bring all parties back to the table and negotiate then we (all stake holders) will have won. Even though CCAA has been extended it doesn't mean that all is going well. This I believe is really the last chance.

  • And now the speculation...

Why is he leaving at this time? His resignation is effective immediately...

Did he quit? Was he pushed out? Is he jumping ship?

  • "Air Canada's financial crisis has turned into a management crisis. Good. The top two airline executives, chief executive officer Robert Milton and restructuring sidekick Calin Rovinescu, went from the men who would reinvent Air Canada to the men who would preside over its demise. Yesterday, Mr. Rovinescu resigned. The question is whether Mr. Milton should follow him out the door." (Eric Reguly of the G&M)

    http://makeashorterlink.com/?V2FE318F7

Well, it does seem promiscuous that the very same people who drove AC into bankruptcy should be the ones in charge of the restructuration, doesn't it?

If I were a creditor, first thing I would ask would be for the incompetent previous managers to be let go. The judge should be in charge and he should appoint a fresh face with no corpses in the closet. Preferably someone who can talk to the unions without raising all sorts of suspicions too.

  • Li ain't returning.
The $20 million is long gone, get over it. The next outfit might offer RM money from the AC treasury and not their own pockets (just like the Cerberus offer).

Calin is the virginal sacrifice to the union gods, likely done by RM personnally and the Board only rubber stamped it.

If RM were to leave there is nothing left and Gecas and Deutsche bank pull out.

Your comment about promised savings shows that you know nothing of the relationship with CAW and CUPE. They both reneged on their deals and the collapse of the Li deal is a result.

Huh? I beleive Mr. Li's "people" claimed that the promised savings that were negotitated with the unions were not all they were made out to be. Is that not the fault of management? Aren't they supposed to vet the the union proposals at the time the deals were made? Are you saying CAW and CUPE changed their side of the agreements, after they were signed?

Carty's deal with Hawaiian sounded pretty loose in the press releases. Maybe he'd relish a good challenge.

  • exAC has been with AC long enough and I know him personally, so I tend to think 'he knows what he is talking about'...... and I think what he posted above makes sense.

    TO EX AC
You don't have a clue what you are talking about. Unions also took cuts
in vacation pay, sick pay, extended benefits, no overtime pay, etc,
etc, etc,....which all effects their income and ultimately, their pensions.
Don't try to simplify it! I'm not saying the CAW's add was the greatest
idea in the world, but the front line people are just sick of getting
beat up. Oh, and by the way, try and find an agent to help you at
YVRAP or any Airport this summer. They will all be in Aeroplan or on the street, so don't complain.

  • Is now the time for the CEO to jump ship ? Me thinks not , it is too late in the game to do that. I think he will show more class and stick around to move things forward.
Things will only get worse if he leaves now IMHO.

  • Since Li has cancelled is bid on AC, there was no more reason for Rovinescu to stay and collect his million$....without them I think he would have left a long time ago!

  • CUPE agreed to allow a computerized roster bidding system to be installed after years of negotiation and the union stalling. They have said since last summer 'No computer program in the world is good enough to satisfy the needs of CUPE'.

  • Come to think of it, when Trinity first appeared on the scene, there were stories that there might be a possible conflict of interest because they used Stikeman's, the law firm where CR was a partner when he was first consulting for AC during the ONEX bid, and then he quit to take the Snr VP post. I suspect this was a Board-driven issue, and the conflict may well have been more real than originally posited.

  • Yes. I Got it

It appears the "dishing out" was from you and the "dishing back" came right away from several of us. It comes with the territory when you get personal.

  • And it burns burns burns....

  • Shagger , welcome back !

  • SH, actually May 21 is the new bankruptcy protection deadline as set out by the Ontario Superior Court.

I agree that seeing TexPac and/or Onex enter the fray would be interesting... I wonder what happened to the talk with Teachers and OMERS, for example? More hot air blown by union leaders to try and generate some hype with the loss of TTI, perhaps.

  • A condition of the Debtor in Posession financing from GE (and the aircraft refinance and ERJ purchase) was that the existing management team remain at AC. The team included Calin and Robert by name.

  • SanCat:
No problem. I have been yelled-at, pilloried, worshipped, thanked, scowled-at, smiled-at, by members of CAW and IAM for years. Acpa and Cupe were lesser eveils because I was never their supervisor, but they still did not all like the things that I had to say everytime (particularily in grievance hearings).

It did take a number of years to get my name on the bathroom wall though. :)

Thank you to all for the nice things said about me. I am humbled and I will try to live up to the billings.

  • Nope, I work for Westjet! :D

    Good one brm! ^ :D :D

Samcat, I think he's jokingly referring to the recent big news on Westjet employees using the AC Corporate Intranet, which is a very protected site.
And with regards to AC Family, I suspect anyone who ever worked for AC or Air Ontario, Air Nova, Air BC etc. and had an employee number, or is even good with computers could create a login on it, but I might be wrong. Also, Empress & ExAC are deeply respected around here and are always a wealth of knowledge - we protect whom we respect ;) Don't take it personally.

  • From today's G&M:

"Mr. Rovinescu said it was his decision to resign, not a request from the Air Canada board, and he attributed it mostly to the impasse between Trinity and the unions.

"In my mind, I had managed to bring to the table one of the most sophisticated international investors, who has lots and lots of airlines and lots of other opportunities to invest in [but] has selected us," he said of Mr. Li. "And to the extent that as a result of the inability of the unions and Trinity to come to an agreement, the deal doesn't close, then I think it's time to hand this last 10 yards over to another running back."

A source close to Air Canada said it became clear to Mr. Rovinescu at a meeting in London on March 25 and 26 that the Li family was rapidly cooling to the deal, insulted by union attitudes and concerned about the airline's prospects.

Mr. Rovinescu has close connections with a key Li family adviser, Frank Sixt, based in Hong Kong. The two met and became friends at high school in Montreal and went through university and law school together before joining Stikeman Elliott LLP, a Montreal law firm that represents Air Canada."

  • ooo - I love it! All-in! High stakes poker! :D

  • Hmmm.. cant be good news ^_

I would read this as a sign that there is a lot of turmoil at the Board. The ominious thing is that they are seeking to give the Monitor more power; this means that there is less confidence that Management can pull things off. I would think it means things are in disarray.

  • If RM and CR were so bad at managing then why GECAS, DB, TTI and Cerberus all insisted on keeping them as part of their deals ?
