Was at YVR last week and wanted a gate pass for access to the ML lounge (with no boarding pass). They hunted everywhere for them and finally found some at J check-in.
The girls said they are being phased out and that is why they were hard to find.
What does this mean? No more passes or a change into how one gets airside? Will it get removed from the SE benefit list?

"scam"???
tsk tsk tsk
...you got a deal Empress! We will drink at AC's expense! I can find my way in, and you can look for a pass! (LOL) But seriously, I would find it to be very nice to be able to sit down with you and chat for a while - I would welcome the opportunity!

SE guide said "Request a gate pass at the check-in/ticket counter..." I've tried to get them from different places ranging from ticketing counter to special services to checkin counter. They usually have a whole notepad of it everywhere, however, almost half of the time I have to tell them about this benefit. However, they have been better lately, most of the more senior AC agents knows about it.
I think this is reasonable and reduces needless crowding.
I don't think so....! I don't think there are more than a couple of SE per day that would go to the lounge if they are not travelling. The only time I go to the lounge if I am not travelling is if I am taking someone to the airport and they don't have access to the lounge then I would take them in or if I am picking someone up. I don't think eliminating this benefit would free up any room in the MLL dramatically!?

It has to be some form of scam...as unless you are flying or SE or an employee at the airport or of an airline or of the security company (now that I could see)...you aren't allowed airside.
What do you do...buy a refundable ticket...not fly and return it?
Come on...come clean with your scam.

Realistically, there is no reason for such a situation to occurr regularly
Exactly what I said before... It's not like you'll decide one day when you get up that you'll go to the MLL for a drink! I don't think AC have anything to worry about. Why not keep this benefit so at least they'll have 1 extra thing to put in the benefit guide for the SEs?
As for sipping Manhattans in the Xerox Business Lounge, remember there is no alcohol permitted in there any more. You may try to sneak into the MLL itself, but they will spot that Manhattan quick enough when you walk past the reception desk with it in hand. Or have you a plan for that one, too?

Fly Boy,
Check-in doesn't handle gate passes...it is special services, atleast at YYZ and YVR.
Dorian
It wouldn't surprise me. Most carriers I have seen that have an open access policy for top tiers, say you can use the lounge any time but you have to get to the lounge on your own steam. That would mean departing or arriving on AC or some other flight, etc. I think this is reasonable and reduces needless crowding. Besides, with a bit of creativity it is not hard to get through security to MLL!

...not a scam honey http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif
We'll have answer this week as we start receiving our SE packages.
More trouble than it is worth?
It is worth a lot to me...you are just jealous.
Dorian
Yup yup... Flyboy, you are jealous. Admit it! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif Since you claimed you are so good at it, I'll meet up with you at YYZ someday and show me how you can sneak in the MLL!
AC specifically said the lead agent at domestic J check-in has the vouchers. Maybe things have changed since. Either way, the very fact that people have heard conflicting things about this just shows how this service is more trouble than it's worth.
Haven't had a problem yet dear...
http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif
No, you are jealous. We don't need to pull any scams to get airside...we do it legit.
Manhattans? Really?

I think organising passes was consuming too much of agents time. Don't forget that if need be, SÉs can probably get around this by calling a Concierge even if AC terminates the benefit. It makes more sense for the Concierges to deal with that than for the lead agent at check-in, who should be dealing with people that are travelling.
Good one Dorian! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif
Technically, not even SÉ are allowed to leave guest PAX in MLL.
I have only used MLL once when not travelling (i.e. not departing OR arriving). Realistically, there is no reason for such a situation to occurr regularly, and I think the gate passes are creating complications for staff now that there are tons of SÉs.
LOL - I can get into MLL whenever I want, without SE status and without gate pass. The only difference is I do it without consuming the time of an AC agent. All these things take is a bit of creativity! As for jealousy? -maybe if they introduce Star Alliance Platinum. Until then, I am kewl with you guys hovering around YYZ, searching for gate pass while I am sipping a manhattan in the XBC! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif
