I went to hang a curtain rod in a house we just purchased. Previous owners had rods in the same area. When I went to drill in the molly's the 8in by 8in section of the wall seems very soft and the paint is peeling and crumbling off very easily. The Molly's won't stay in when I try to drill in the screws with the hook, they fall right out because the wall is too soft. What can we do???? What is wrong with our wall?
It's most likely that you've developed a leak around the fireplace flashing on the roof. First you'll need to seal that and then cut out the drywall and replace it. Your insulation in the wall will probably need replacing as well because it serves as a wick when there is water present.

The only way your drywall would be ''soft'' or ''spongy'' is if there was a leak in the wall in one point of time. If it's near your fireplace, than maybe that is where the leak was. Chimneys are known to leak from time to time.
Chris l answer is good, another thought, if you just bought that house, check with the lawyer who helped you close, the previous owner may be responsible for the repair.
