Welcome to:gzgq.com

  • Think it should be 'deserves'

(sorry to be a pernickity Brit  )

    :)

  • Where is this coming from di someone dis' you?:p

Had to read that twice...still didn't get it!

    LOL j/ks

    mos ;-P

  • Lol, I really didn't know which way to take you there for a bit, Obeika, glad it's more straightforward than the double or even triple sarcasm that I was fearing (and struggling so much with!)

Alas, the sad (and perhaps funny?!) thing (quite apart from the fact that this has been my most popular thread so far ) is that I'm now quite nostalgic for the old 'deserve' rep comment. In fact, I wish i'd never mentioned it...

I henceforth pledge to assiduously ignore other little grammatical discrepancies that i've come across here on Jref - i'm now becoming rather attached to them all!

    :car:

  • I can't think how the spelling mistakes made their way into the user rep titles haha :D
Seriously, though, many thanks for that, the work of everyone who helps with the site is very much appreciated :)
This thread's quite entertaining to read back. And, somehow, one of my most popular so far too, lol.

Now then since it has been changed does anyone else besides me think that "you deserves respect" is incorrect?

If I said man-of-stone deserves respect, ok no problem, but the verb must agree with the subject in number and person right. Someone correct me if I wrong here?

However if the girl or guy's name was ゆう Yuu or ゆ Yu, then it would be ok as those are proper names and not a pronoun.

Are Admin1 and I the only ones to have caught this?:(

  • I don't know E-zee Posse - is it a British group?

  • 'You' can be singular or plural. 'I' is also singular and also doesn't take the 's'.
Only the 'third person' singular takes it - he, she and it.
    :souka:
All I know, and I have been told repeatedly is, I is special.
    :p

  • I posted in this thread to see what my rep hover-over says.... aaaaaand you can't hover over your own rep.

  • I think I is pretty grammatical!

You can say, speaking about the word "you": "You" is _______" Or "I" is __________" But of course in normal speech - "you are" or "I am", "he is". What about "he ain't"?

  • I get the impression that things aren't fixed round here unless you PM someone in charge. Still, if that's how things work then so be it. I just wanted to give a little heads-up. And I have to say that the forum runs pretty well as it is, it seems, and that the moderation is so far pretty good (thank you guys!)

Thanks for your heads-up, MoS! Spelling mistake corrected, you deserves respect.

  • Respect my friend, i like your posts and don't worried you are a cool brit, english man! thumbs up for Made Of Stone (MOS)

  • You are quite right, to to truly honest here with you I was only paying attention to the sentence structure and not what one sees when they hover over the "rep" of a member.

My mistake thanks for taking the time to wipe the sand from my eye's:p

  • yukio_michael has a spectacular aura aboutI guess that's good to know! (hmmm... seems to work now.... :p)

  • I remember Culture Club (don't know if it's British or American, though) - it was popular here for a while. Interestingly, it was very popular in Sri Lanka in the '80s! Sorry - this is off-topic from correct grammar!

  • You is also special!

  • Thanks for your heads-up, MoS! Spelling mistake corrected, you deserves respect
    :? :? :? .............

  • Thanks for this most entertaining thread!! :giggle:

I've never thought about this aspect of the English language - "you" being singular but not needing the "s" in "deserves". I'm really glad I've never had to learn English as a foreign language!

  • Had to read that twice...still didn't get it!

Just asking you how did this question come about? Where did you read the word deserve, when it should be deserves?

Sorry about that, What I asked you was..

Where did this come from, did someone disrespect you?:( :-)

Obeika san, i'm glad you edited your post before I started writing my reply, because I have a little more idea of what your trying to say (but still rather flummoxed, lol)

The way I see it is, yes, 'you deserve respect' is proper and correct. When you hover over the rep bar of another user, though, you'll (now) see 'so'n'so deserves respect' - also correct. Perhaps this is the point you're driving at - even if that username is a plural, it's still correct, because the subject is only one user.

After all, if i called a child of mine 'Stones' then you'd have to say things like 'Stones is a cute little fella, even though he's got a strange name' rather than
'Stones are cute little fellas, even though they've got strange names.'

Think that's clear enough, though can't help feeling you're pulling my leg on this (and respect if you are!) And if that is the case, would you mind putting [double irony][/double irony] tags on your posts in the future, so I can spot it? lol ;P

Kayo - you can't give yourself respect, you must wait until it's given unto you by other members. Good luck!

  • how can i crick up my reputation? mines always: become famous soon enough :p

  • Thought you were joking!
It's the little green bar(s) under your username here...I hovered over one member's collection of little green bars (not that it/they mean anything in the greater scheme...) and it said 'X deserve respect'. I just thought it was a small 'crinkle' in the system that could/should easily be ironed out...

I was joking, but I also didn't realize where you were refering to either, sorry about that my mistake.

    Underneath the reputation bars right?

  • Thanks for this most entertaining thread!! :giggle:

You can be singular or plural, depending on how you're using it at the time.

Maybe that explains it. Maybe "you" is grammatically always plural even if it's not always semantically such!

Now you's know a bit about what Japanese people and the rest of the world have to deal with when learning "our "language". :relief:

There are so many things we's take for granted that it is fairly easy to understand why they's have a hard time too!:p

  • Hopefully an admin will see this and fix it someday. But something of this nature...I wouldn't hold my breath!

  • Oh yes! I get it - "you" can be plural, as in "you all" (or "ya'll" if you're from the southern U.S.). I've known people learning English as a second language, and I can see how it could get confusing with "exceptions" to every rule.

  • I posted in this thread to see what my rep hover-over says.... aaaaaand you can't hover over your own rep.

yukio_michael has a spectacular aura about

  • And you two doesn't know how to use punctuation to distinguish grammatical points from normal speech!!

    :thankyou:

  • Obeika, I meant to say it's underneath your number of posts (my last reply was ambiguous, I know. I have no idea what that green bar under my username means, in fact perhaps might be bliss after all - quite probably it means 'pernickity Brit in my case, lol)

Mikawa Ossan...quite right you are! I get the impression that things aren't fixed round here unless you PM someone in charge. Still, if that's how things work then so be it. • I don't know E-zee Posse - is it a British group?

I think so Sarapva, but i'm not really sure, it was just something that came to me when I read your post, (popped into the consciousness, if you will!)...in any case i'd like to safely say that 'one-hit-wonders' doesn't start with an 'e' but then again the way this thread has been progressing, I wouldn't be all that surprised!!

For what it's worth, I do seem to remember that E-Zee Posse had something to do with Boy George of Culture Club fame, before he took to cleaning the streets of NYC...:relief:

  • Lol, just found this old thread again

I think I is pretty grammatical!

I think 'you' is pretty grammatical too, Sarapva!

And, don't forget that sage advice from the song by the E-zee Posse - everything begins with an e!!

    made of wordplay :)

  • :? :? :? .............

Damn, where did I leave those “irony” tags?” :p
