Tips on becoming AA Executive Platinum please

Welcome to:gzgq.com

  • I want to become Executive Platinum. I fly discount coach so will it take me 200,000 miles to achieve this status. It looks like I only get .5 miles on coach fare, and it takes 100,000. Any tips would be appreciated.

Also is there any half off awards. I am an Alaska member, and for 15,000 points, you can purchase a ticket for half price and you get to keep all the miles.

  • i didn't have time to take advantage of it, but i was able to string a jfk, ohare, st. louis, ohare, heathrow, ohare, jfk flight together for feb. for $215 or so. i priced it out in january for february but work demands were too much so i could't buy the ticket. but it was yummy and tempting. p.s.-it was leaving saturday returning sunday. so, no hotel needed.

no half-off awards (except for "old miles" awards). and as has been pointed out, you don't need 100000 points; miles will do.

your main advantage with a canadian AAdvantage address is that many discount CX fare codes earn full miles.
which gives you the option of cheap trips to HKG as opposed to the ever-popular NRT amongst western-dwelling FT'ers.

You will have to fly 100,000 actual flight miles one OneWorld or AA, or get 100,000 qualifying points. Even if you fly discounted coach all the time, you only need to fly 100,000 actual flight miles. The qualifying point scenario is for those business class and first class travelers who qualify somewhat on the basis of paying higher fares by getting bonus points toward elite qualification.

The best way to qualify on the cheap is taking a lot of Net SAAver/internet-special fares. Currently you can go to Argentina for $467 including taxes from NYC. With 9 round-trips you will make EXP quickly. Or you can do NYC-LON for $270-$370 per round trip and do that 12-13 times if you get creative with your routings.

For $3500-$4500 you can qualify on the cheap and get all the goodies including 8 VIPOW upgrades (even for international business on AA) which is a huge benefit for the leisure traveler or the business traveler looking to have comfortable leisure travel in his/her off-time.

  • Actually.. It only takes 100k miles to get EXP status. 66.5k In first class.

You get EXP with either 100k Points, or Miles... even in discount coach.

  • Biggest problem you will have is getting into SEA to start your mileage runs, since starting on the Island or from YVR adds considerable cost to the trips you will take, and there are next to no bargains from Canada. In fact, it will likely be cheaper to fly CX out of LAX or SFO than from YVR. [Though YVR-JFK is a good route on which CX offers a very competitive fare, with lots of bonus miles.]

As noted, CX provides miles for Canadian AA members on fares from which US members cannot. And Gold requires just 18K and Plat 35K, though ExecPlat still requires 100K. [AA offers this to compete with AC's program, which uses lower thresholds for its lower elite tiers. This is due to offering only 50% mileage on most discounted fares domestically, making achieving 25K and 50K extemely difficult for those just travelling within Canada.]

Consider doing a Gold or Platinum Challenge to get started. Do a "search" here and you will find lots of posts on this fast track to elite on AA.

Yes, AA does discount the mileage requirement for Canadian members, but not for EXP.
