As reported by www.abcnews.com travel section today:
American Airlines will raise the number of frequent-flier miles required for business-class and first-class international tickets on most routes, effective 2/1/99, the
Wall Street Journal reports. In addition, upgrading to first class on a discounted domestic ticket, will jump to 30,000 miles from 20,000 miles. Coach-class awards will remain at existing levels, American said.
Competing airlines said they are studying the American move and haven’t decided whether to take similar action.
Hey beard58,
It depends where you are flying to.
Fly 20 times a year to Central and South
America Couch, and then tell me again.
Remember American started the first frequent
flyer program. I predict in six months we
all will be on the various airline sites
and hotel sites furious over raising the point levels. And deelmakur, you are right. There's bound
to be a downtown in the business travel/airline market eventually. Then they'll come begging to us for business. And
we should say "OK, take back those increases
for travel awards." Someone should remember
when they made the hikes and remind them when
things go sour.
The AA web site tries to portray the changes as "winners and losers", i.e. some awards are less now and some are more now. My feeling is that the changes are an overall negative for consumers and positive for AA.
I just got my AAdvantage newsletter and it details these changes. Not good news.
Beard58: I guess it's a matter of choice and
comfort tolerability for those of us who don't mind coach and those who must fly first
all the time.
For those long Cross-Country and overseas flights, I shoot for upgrades to a better seat. I will try to pay for first, but my
company a lot of times sees otherwise.
I have a bad back, am 6'2 and almost as big as Mark McGuire and David Wells so I need some room for comfort. I can live with coach, but if I have the chance for an upgrade I'm going for it. Heck, you have nothing to lose! CATMAN

You said it best MIleage Addict! AA's making
it tougher for members like me to stay loyal
to this airline when they make it tougher
for us to try to get decent awards.
Can we expect the other carriers to do the
same? I'll give great Vegas odds to that!

AA sucks. Like their friends at DL, these guys sit up nights figuring how to screw their best flyers. It is the unfortunate by-product of an extremely good business cycle. Simply stated, they are making big profits, and acting high handed.
Alas, its a cyclical business. Remember this baloney, and when things get tough again in the airline business (as they always do) make it payback time by taking your business elsewhere (and letting them know).
so you need more miles--big deal! coach is not a death sentence. i've flown coah 98% of the time with only a few upgrades--i save miles for free tickets. live with it--it's free!!
